Slack Country

The term “Side Country” or “Slack Country” are terms used to describe ski terrain that is usually accessed by ski area lifts and is relatively close to the resort. Equipment used for this is built for those skiers who may venture out for a few runs or a day of touring and head back to the resort. Basically this gear is designed for the downhill skier that wants to do some ski touring. It tends to be more robust and performs well on and off the piste.

Backcountry or Alpine Touring equipment is suited for skiers looking for lighter weight equipment that is best suited for longer ski tours or climbing. So if getting to the top of a mountain or just being out in the alpine is just as fun to you as skiing down the hill, then you may want to check out this type of gear.

Education and Safety

If you are interested in heading out into the backcountry, and want to learn how to manage the dangers that lay beyond the resort, Island Alpine Guides offers Avalanche Canada training and a wealth of knowledge about backcountry skiing on Vancouver Island.
